My Review for Masquerade of Mirrors by Samantha Hartwood

"I hate how much I love it out here. I shouldn't. But the thrill ignites me, even as it terrifies me".

Dark Academia is becoming a firm favourite of mine, and Masquerade of Mirrors by Samantha Hartwood just blew me away. πŸ–€✨ Packed with magic, mages, devious students and a school that is more illusion than reality, I was hooked.

Now, remember that I rarely read the synopsis of a book, so when I was thrown into the middle of a deadly desert at the beginning, I began to wonder if this was Star Wars all over again! πŸ˜‚ Where was the magic? Why was I just reading about sand and an ill old man? But OMG — the magic was coming, as was the hot mage and his curious secrets. πŸ”₯πŸͺ„

In Samantha's incredible debut novel, you'll watch Taera go from an inexperienced young girl, with no knowledge of what lies outside her hut in the desert, to an awesome, sassy young woman who is so powerful it makes even Nikolai step back in wonder. ⚡️

Nikolai himself wears a virtual coat of armour and, underneath, is a very vulnerable young man whose only concern in life is his family. πŸ–€

I adored this book so much that I set out to investigate whether there were any Special Editions and, to my delight, I found that Novaflame had one in their book subscription box. πŸ“š✨ I waited patiently and, a week or so after I knew it had been sent out, I checked Vinted and VOILA! I now have a spectacular pair of eyes staring down at me from the sprayed edges on my bookshelf! πŸ‘€πŸ˜

Buy this book, borrow it, steal it! Just read it — if you like fantasy, you're gonna love this. πŸͺ„πŸ”₯Thank you so much to Samantha for sending me an ARC copy of Masquerade of Mirrors. πŸ’•πŸ“–

About the Book

Don’t look at the desert. Don’t think about the desert. Never step onto the sand. Taera has followed these rules her entire life—until he arrives.

Impossibly gorgeous, with a face masked in magic, Nikolai kidnaps Taera and drags her deep into the dunes. He says she’s powerful and needs to be trained…if she ever wants to see her family again.

Thrust into a deadly school of illusions and lies, Taera can’t trust anyone. Especially not her breathtaking, ruthless captor. Top student and notorious liar, his secrets run deeper than the sand. He’s her worst nightmare—and everything she craves.

The cutthroat Halls of Glass have a mind of their own. Trapped within their looping corridors, Taera is surrounded by hostile students and forced to rely on Nikolai.

Taera knows she shouldn’t fall for his illusions. But magic requires a partnership, and he’s the only mage who can handle her wild, untamed power.

And the only way he’ll help her is if she pretends to be his.

About Samantha, by Samantha

Hi, I’m Samantha Hartwood! I'm a debut indie author who writes dark academia romantasy. I love steamy romance and unique fantasy worlds.

I’ve been filling notebooks with stories for as long as I can remember. After going on a side quest and getting a stem degree, I considered and dismissed more practical career options to follow my heart. I’m delighted to be pursuing my dream job: coffee shop customer *cough* romantasy author. When I’m not drinking peppermint tea, playing games with friends, or sitting by a warm fire on a cold Canadian night, I can probably be found hiding with a book.
