My Review for Rites of the Starling by Devney Perry, read by Samantha Brentmoor, Jason Clarke and Megan Wicks

“Good will always battle evil,” he said. “Light will always fight the dark. In those moments, you’ll learn who you truly are.”

OMG, I love this series. ❤️ Rites of the Starling was our Sequel Shelf pick for June for #thatbonkersbookclub, but I listened to it the week it was released—I just couldn't wait! I'd had it reserved on Libby for months. 🎧📚

I had absolutely no idea what was going on. 😂 I couldn't work out whether the two stories were dual timelines or running simultaneously, which, for me, made the story even more addictive. And no... I didn't guess! Every reveal came as a complete surprise. 🤯 Everything clicked into place in the end, but honestly, trying to figure it out was half the fun.

The multiple storylines and narrators were incredible, and all three narrators brought so much passion to the story. ❤️ So many questions were answered, but even more have appeared—or are still complete mysteries. I loved the politics, the romance, the battles, and of course Faze, who remains a little (sometimes aggressive 😂) cutie who absolutely adores Evie and protects her with everything he has. 🥹

Now we have to wait until sometime in 2027 for the next book. 😭 In the meantime, I'll definitely be rereading the first two because I'm convinced there are at least half a dozen clues and details I completely missed the first time around! 👀✨

About the Book

Calandra's five kingdoms are on the verge of destruction. The crux migration is coming. And in the wake of a devastating attack, I've been separated from the man who owns my heart.

I'm lost. Terrified. Homesick. Hunted by monsters, driven to exhaustion, and kidnapped by a powerful priest, the only thing keeping me going is the little girl counting on me to keep her safe. It's my turn to become the Guardian.

Our lives change one fateful night. A night of death. A night of monsters. A night of truths. That night, when I learn the real meaning of fear—and the depth of my own strength.

Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice. But what if I embrace my crown? What if the secrets I uncover save our realm? What if my sacrifice means salvation for the man I love?

For too long, I've feared the monsters we make. It's time to discover the monster within.
